To load a template into a layout, click on the “Change Layout” button on the Layout toolbar (In ArcGIS 9.1, you can also right click on white space on the page when in Layout view, and select “Change Layout…”). You would save a template by selecting “Save As…” from the “File” menu, and then changing the “Save as type:” field to “ArcMap Templates *.mxt”. You might wish to do this if, for example, a book or thesis you were writing used two different GIS databases in different chapters, and you wanted to try to maintain a “house style” so that all of your maps looked as if they were produced by the same source. If you have a particular layout that you are happy with and that you wish to use for other sets of GIS data, you can use templates to save and apply your current layout.
